Treated Wastewater Awareness Project

"Promoting Safe Reuse for Agriculture & Water Security – Duhok "

Havdast Group

Overview

In partnership with UNICEF and the University of Duhok, this student-led project investigated the use of treated wastewater (TWW) for irrigation in Duhok. The goal: to assess public perception, raise awareness, and promote sustainable water reuse amid Iraq’s growing water crisis.

What We Did

  • 174 surveys targeting the youth and broader community
  • 30 interviews with experts in water, agriculture, and climate
  • 2 focus groups with diverse participants
  • Focused on awareness, barriers, and willingness to adopt TWW

Key Findings

  • 41% showed strong awareness of TWW benefits
  • 63% recognized climate change as a reason to reuse wastewater
  • 73% believed TWW is safe if treated properly
  • Main barriers: low awareness (30%), tech limitations (24%), cultural concerns
  • Focus groups revealed high willingness to use TWW with proper education and safety assurance

Team Recommendations

  • Launch awareness campaigns via schools, workshops, and social media
  • Invest in treatment technologies and water testing tools
  • Engage key stakeholders: farmers, policymakers, religious leaders
  • Provide financial incentives for farmers adopting TWW
  • Establish national safety standards and integrate TWW into water policy

Conclusion

The project shows strong public openness to using treated wastewater, especially among youth. With strategic education, investment, and regulation, Duhok can lead the way in sustainable water reuse for agriculture—protecting its future water resources.
